Meet Our Assistant Trainer
Surika Struwig
Assistant Trainer
I am employed at Revelation Hill Equestrian Centre. I am Assistant Trainer to Enid Norton.
My work schedule includes different aspects of training horses from jogging, lining to schooling both equitation & performance horses.
I am also responsible for the day to day smooth running of the yard. I attend to horses that are in need of particular medical support, Kinesio-taping some horses that are physically presenting strain through the musculoskeletal system and taking thermographs and analysing the diagnostic studies to determine particular training regiments for each horse.
I assist in teaching some of the students in both performance and equitation training and sometimes through in a dressage lesson to add to their rider skills.
As part of my daily requirements as Assistant Trainer, I am also expected to further my tertiary education related to equine studies. I am currently studying Animal Communication, on completion I am still required to complete courses in Sports Phycology, Neuroscience, Sports Nutrition, Stewards & Judges Exams.
The most important thing that I have learned about horses while at Revelation Hill EC is that work ethic, discipline and total passion are the only factors that matter to survive a career in horses. I have been taught that this is not a 9-5/Monday to Friday kind of job but rather an all consuming 24/7 365 days a year commitment. Most importantly I have learned that the horse’s well being is always weighed heavier than the riders needs and by carrying the horse first, his career will run long after his rider achieved their goals and choose to move on to the next suitable partner.
I am totally committed to maintaining and developing a career in the Saddle Horse fraternity. I have developed a love for the industry, the sport and the uniqueness of the breed. I hope to be recognised by the Professional Trainers Association and become an approved member in the future and improve aspects of my horsemanship as I develop.
Kevin Eltringham, Thinus Rademan & Enid Norton.
At my age and level of training experience, I take all criticism seriously and find key points out of the negative to empower myself as a better trainer, individual and ambassador to the sport. It’s not always easy to admit to fault or failure, but these are the best teachers in the long run.
If I could change one thing in our industry, I would change the outside perception of Saddle Horses. Coming mainly from a Dressage background, I was hesitant to step into this world as a result of my perception around the breed. I can say without a doubt, the training and showing I have come to experience is no where close to what I perceived, together with many of my friends that are still competing in other disciplines.
